As part of conducting a special awareness programme on the eve of the Environment Day 2015, ICPE and NSWAI ENVIS Centres had jointly organized a Workshop on Domestic Waste Management in collaboration with L&T Hydrocarbon Engineering Ltd., a group company of Larsen & Toubro Ltd.,one of the largest corporates in the country, at Powai, Mumbai, on 3rd June, 2015.

The Workshop comprised of presentation, screening of short films and demonstration to the employees of Health, Safety & Environment Division of the company.

Dr.Amiya Kumar Sahu, President & Envis Co-coordinator of  NSWAI deliberated on  ‘zero’ waste concept highlighting the need to treat “waste” as an input and not as a “garbage”.

Shri Tushar K. Bandopadhyay, Technical Director & Envis Co-coordinator of ICPE deliberated on Plastics Waste Management highlighting the benefits derived from plastics and the various technologies developed within the country to recycle and recover all the plastics waste generated in the country in a scientific manner. The deliberation also contained the environmental benefit derived from plastics in saving the earth from the effects of global warming to a great extent.

Prof. Jayant Joshi, a Microbiologist by profession, gave a demonstration how residential wet waste could be composted using a simple technique within the house itself at a minimum cost. A 15-litre capacity plastic basket having perforation is used with microorganism culture specially developed from natural organic resources is spread at the bottom of the basket and the wet waste comprising mainly vegetable/fruit waste, used flowers, egg shells etc. and is mixed thoroughly. The idea is if the individuals could turn the wet waste generated at home into compost, then 50% load at the landfill could be right away reduced.

The employees of the company were appreciative and expressed their willingness to join the global effort of reducing the waste and support the slogan.
